This can be arranged at any facility and is free for students and employees. External readers pay CZK 240 per year for registration and can register at the library in Brno. Registration requires a card to be made and cannot be completed while you wait, we recommend you first of all contact the library at .

How do I log-on to the computer in the library or Information Centre?
You have to be authorised to log-on to the computers in the library and in the Information Centre, use the log-on name and password you received when you registered. (The same applies for the information system)

What should I do if I lose or forget my computer access password?
Your faculty integrator will provide you with your forgotten access password for computers in the study areas. You can find the list of system integrators on the UIS website.

My ISIC card does not work, it is probably damaged. What should I do?
If your ISIC card is snapped or otherwise damaged (it does not work with the scanners by the copy machines), the study department at your faculty will replace it for you. This naturally also applies if you lose the card.

What does it mean when items in the catalogue have a loan period designated as “Study in room only”?
Study in room only items means that the book or university textbook cannot be taken home. These publications must remain on site for studying, copying or scanning for other students. University textbooks designated as read only are marked as such.

Are there any exceptions when a book or university textbook designated as Study in room only can be taken home?
Yes, the fund of items designated as Study in room only can be lent to take homeover the weekend and overnight. This concerns all books at the Information Centre and marked books and university textbooks in the study room and in library Z, at the library in Lednice. These items can be borrowed 2 hours before closing time at the earliest and must be returned on the following business day (overnight loans) or on Monday (weekend loans) by 9 a.m. A fine of CZK 500 / borrowed item is paid for exceeding the loan period.

How long can books and university textbooks be loaned for?
The loan period is given for each item in the catalogue. The loan period and renewal options can be seen by the items you have borrowed in your account in the on-line catalogue. You will also receive notification of the end of the loan period to your university e-mail address.

What is the fee if I return a book late?
Fees for late returns are governed by the valid price list. The system generates the fine after the publication is returned depending on the number of days by which the book is returned late.

Can I also return a book without an ISIC card or for a friend?
Yes, you can return borrowed books without an ISIC card and return books for your classmates. But be careful! The library checks the borrowed item in, in the name of the person who checked it out. We cannot tell if you swap copies of one title amongst each other.

What should I do if I need to return a book and the library is closed?
You can also return borrowed items at another ICUK facility. You can use the bibliobox outside the library in Brno, library Z at FRRMS and in front of the library in Lednice to return items outside the opening times of the Information Centre or library. Return items borrowed from individual libraries at institutes to the specific individual library. You can verify that your items have been checked-out in the catalogue.
Place books into the bibliobox through the marked opening, these items will be collected on the next business day and checked-out in the automated loan system.

Can I renew the loan period for books and university textbooks?
The renewal option depends on the loan category (period) and on whether the book has been reserved for another user. You can see information about the renewal option by each borrowed title in your account in the on-line catalogue, you can renew the item yourself in the catalogue.

I was unable to find the book that our tutor recommended we borrow. Is it possible to submit a proposal to purchase a book?
Yes, this is possible. We welcome your proposals for books to purchase. You can inform employees at the study rooms or library of your requirements, or write to the contact address in the catalogue .

Where can I find Bachelor’s theses, Master’s theses or Doctoral theses (essentially university qualification theses)?
All these papers are registered by the library in electronic form, you can find entries for them in the catalogue. You will also see their location by their entry in the catalogue. Theses stored in the library in Brno or in Lednice are available as read only, theses stored in the archive are available in the archive study room as read only by prior arrangement. If there is an electronic form of the thesis there will be a reference to the full text in the catalogue.

Can I borrow a magazine to take home?
Yes, you can borrow individual issues of a magazine or the entire bound volume from all facilities of the Information Centre and the Central Library in Brno and in Lednice. The loan period is one week. If there is an electronic version of the magazine there is a reference to the full text in the catalogue.

I forgot my ISIC card, can I still print or copy something?
You must have your own ISIC card for printing documents. You send the print task from the computer your are logged-in on under your profile and so the person logged-in to the computer must be the same as the person scanning their ISIC card at the printer scanner, so that the printer can identify that this is your print task. It is possible to copy without your own ISIC card, but please ask the staff for a special university card.

What does “database” mean?
Databases (or electronic information sources) are files of data in electronic form. They are classified according to type and content, but we can essentially say that databases compile information about magazines, articles, anthologies, books or other documents. Some make their full texts available, some just the bibliographic data or statistical and factual data. Some databases are freely accessible over the internet, however most of them are paid sources. You must choose the correct database depending on what you specifically need to find.

Where can I find out which databases our university has access to?
You can find a list of all the databases our university has access to on the website of the Information Centre under the link Electronic information sources. For faster orientation in the field of branch specialisations, the databases are identified using icons (natural sciences) and (social sciences).

Can I search multiple databases at once?
Yes. You can use the meta-search engine EBSCO Discovery Service.

Where can I find electronic magazines?
The Publications from A to Z . link page will help you find electronic magazines. You will be able to find all the magazines we have access to at our university in this digital library and also those magazines that are freely available on the internet. You can find out more on the website of the Information Centre under the link Electronic information sources -- Publications from A to Z.

Can I also use the databases from home?
Yes, students and employees can also use the databases our university subscribes to from home. So-called remote access through a proxy server is used for this purpose. You can find the instructions for connection through the proxy server at the website: http://proxy.mendelu.cz.

Who can help me familiarise myself with the databases?
We realise that work with the databases is not easy at first. Our university subscribes to many databases and it is not easy to choose the right one. This is why we offer you individual consultations, during which we will help you find the information you need, as well as providing group instruction. You can find the necessary contact information on the Library services.
