Data Management Plan

Data Management Plan (DMP): a document describing what data and how they will be created during the research, the document includes information on the availability and use of this data. The data management plan is regularly updated during research to reflect the actual work with the data.

In the document Methodological Guide to Open Science for Project Applicants you fill find inspiration, how to describe data in a project proposal and how to write Data Management Plan.

Main topics of DMP

  1. Administrative data
    • basic information about the research (e.g. project name, funding provider, project partners), research abstract.
  2. Data collection, data reuse
    • what data and how they will be created, whether already existing data will be used (use of standards and methodologies, data format, volume of data, software used, naming and structure of data/files, data quality control).
  3. Dokumentation and metadata
    • how the data will be documented for future reading and use (an annex with metadata and documentation, metadata standards, information on the methodology used, persistent identifiers used e.g. DOI, data quality control).
  4. Ethical and legal issues
    • consent to storing and sharing of the data, sensitive data, anonymization/pseudonymization of data, data licenses, existing embargo, whether data will be shared.
  5. Data storage and backup
    • where the data will be stored (data storage, (data repository, volume of data, who will be responsible for backing up and restoring data, data security).
  6. Long-term protection
    • existing terms and conditions/legal conditions for data storing, costs of long-term data storing and data sharing.
  7. Data sharing
    • with whom the data will be shared, how the data will be shared, restrictions, conditions of data sharing, how potential users will find out about the data.
  8. Responsibility and resources
    • roles and responsibilities for DMP, other expertise, use of software and hardware, financial and human resources.

Online tools for Data management plans

DMP online
You can log in under the institution MENDELU, you can search for already created plans on the Public DMPs page. The basic template is DCC, there is also a template for Horizon, after filling in Funder: H2020. LINK

Argos OpenAIRE
Online tool from OpenAIRE. LINK

Data Stewardship Wizard
An online tool for creating a Data Management Plan, it is free and in English. The tool contains instructional questions that help to intuitively complete the DMP. You can also set different templates, for example for Horizon Europe. The tool allows you to compare how FAIR your data is. LINK.
For Researchers allows you to create a Data management plan for free after registration.
Login to DSW: Projects: Create: Create a project: Name and Template of the project: Horizon Europe Project Template.

Data Management Plan consultation

Do you want advice on a Data Management Plan? Contact us, we will be happy to help you.

A data management plan is best completed by the researcher because they know best what the research involves. An employee of the Open Science Center will supply the necessary materials and instructions and advise what to add, or suggest a better solution.

How does the service work?

    • Initial consultation with the Open Science Center, what will be needed for the Data Management Plan: approx. 60 minutes.
    • Supply of necessary instructions (DMP template, DMP patterns) so that the scientist can write a DMP according to his/her research.
    • Comments on the completed DMP: an OS center employee will review your completed Data Management Plan and suggest changes or ask for missing information.
    • The scientist, in cooperation with the Open Science Center, will work on changes and proposals (for about 50 minutes).
Data repositories

A trusted data repository: 1) provides persistent identifiers, 2) contains metadata, 3) contains licenses for data use,
4) preserves data for a long time.
