A brief description of the research data

One of the conditions for submitting your project application may be a "Brief description of the research data" in your project. You will find this condition in both, TAČR and GAČR projects. At this stage it is not yet about creating a Data Management Plan, but about describing in a few paragraphs how research data will be generated, processed or stored during the project.

In a brief description, you should ideally comment on where you store your data during the research, what the nature of your data is (sensitive data, etc.), and describe whether you use secondary data and where it can be found. It is also a good idea to give details of how research data is shared between researchers or secured during the project. Also at this stage, you need to describe what data repository you are going to use to publish the data after the end of the project, whether the dataset will be openly accessible, under what licence and whether the data repository will assign a persistent identifier to it. Be sure to mention any barriers to open access or time embargoes on data publishing.

A brief description of the research data – Checklist

✔ FAIR principles – do not forget to mention FAIR principles, especially your effort to ensure your research data will be findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.

✔ Data management plan – you can describe that during the first six months after the project implementation, the data management plan will be created. It is a good practice to mention that DMP will be regularly updated and a specific project team member will be responsible for it.

✔ Specific and practical information – it is necessary to describe specific formats of your research data, its volume, data storage types, used analysis software, use of specific secondary data, and include links, or even project names

✔ Planned project outputs – specify what are the planned outputs of your project and describe if the research data on which the outputs are based will be published in repositories openly, if not describe why

✔ MENDELU position – for a further picture, you can also link to the Strategy of Open Access and Open Science at Mendelu.

Example of text used in the brief description of the research data

“Research data will be stored on XY during the project (please fill in where you store the data during the research: e.g. on a shared workstation/OneDrive O365) that is regularly backed up.“

“The project will use data from databases XY... (fill in which + link) for the purpose of YZ.“

“The project will use XY data from previous research/project YZ (add title + link).“

“The project will generate XY data in ZX format using the YZ method...“

“The project will collect AB samples, and their collection will be done by *ADD TEXT*“

“The project will e.g. include questionnaire surveys focused on *ADD TEXT*, informed consent of respondents will be ensured...“
